Monasteries in Sliven eparchy, Southeastern Bulgaria

Sliven diocese includes the areas around Yambol and Bourgas, as well as Strandzha and Sakar mountain. There are several active monasteries in the Sliven eparchy. The majority of them were built on the remnants of previously existing monasteries after the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman yoke.

Nowadays in immediate proximity to Bourgas are the active the Gornoezerovski Monastery “St. Virgin Mary” and the Pomorie monastery “St. George the Victorious” which are open to visitors.

The Golyamo Bukovo Monastery “St. Petka (St Life-Giving Spring)” is the only one survived and functional monastery in the Strandzha mountain. The Ustrem monastery “Holy Trinity” which lies 13km away from Topolovgrad is the biggest and best preserved monastery in the region and Strandzha and Sakar Mountain.

The Bakadzhik monastery “St. Spas” and the Kabile monastery “The Nativity of Virgin Mary” are located near Yambol.
